A Master Plan For Downsizing

When some cherished clients decided to downsize from a 4 acre estate/mansion to a 1.5 acre cottage, they needed help revamping a ‘new’, yet neglected landscape. We developed and installed a master plan that would be safer underfoot as they aged, was ecologically responsive, required less maintenance, and yet was beautiful in all seasons. The resulting landscape included a permeable paver driveway, a new orchard, an organic vegetable garden, an alpine garden, a flowering meadow, a generous patio, and several stable bluestone walkways that would allow them to move safely around the property.

Asian Inspired Gardens

Over the years several clients have asked us to create gardens with an Asian flair. The architecture, the use of water elements, the placement of stone, and the plant palette work together to allow us a ‘zen’ moment in our busy lives.

Many people seem to be drawn to the calm atmosphere that the Eastern style garden provides, and we love working with the Japanese aesthetic, so we’re all as happy as edamame in a pod!

Lawn Free Native Garden

These clients wanted to eliminate their front and side lawns - yay! We love to remove at least some of the lawns in our landscapes, and replace it with native plants. This increases diversity, provides food and cover for many kinds of wildlife, and once established, uses less water than a lawn. Plus, it looks so much better! In this case, the clients kept a nice big lawn in the back for rolling around, picnics, and the occasional crochet match. In the front we planted a variety of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and perennials, as well as a few ‘exotic’ favorites of the clients. The pathway is goshen stone (aka mica schist), from central Massachusetts. It’s full of mica flecks which sparkle gold and silver in the sun. Mr. Client is an inventive engineer; we were thrilled when he wanted to develop a ‘surprise’ fountain. It shoots up balls of water at random intervals, much to the delight of the kids on their way to school!

Back Bay Boston

The Back Bay neighborhood in Boston, is known for its attractive front gardens. But our client didn’t have one of them! By removing the overwhelming hedge, replacing it with a wrought iron fence, and incorporating a stone path and some simple plantings, we created a postage stamp size garden that would make the residents happy to come home, and give the passersby a view too.

HGTV Back Yard Makovers

A few years back, Darcy was asked to design five landscapes for the Cape Cod season of ‘Going Yard’, a landscape makeover reality show on HGTV. Each design had to have 3 “Wow Factors” that both the clients and the TV viewers would enjoy - and each landscape had to be constructed in 4 days! Here are a few examples from the show.
